Geting to Sedgefield
Sedgefield is easily accessed by plane, train or automobile. It lies on the N2 between Port Elizabeth (210 km) and Cape Town (490 km). The town is on the N2 National Route between Knysna (25km) and George (40km) and can easily be accessed from the N1 National Route (Johannesburg 1140 km) via Beaufort West, Oudtshoorn and George. Bus companies offer daily services along, and to, the Garden Route, and car hire services are readily available from any of the centres around Sedgefield.
If you prefer to fly, two airports in nearby towns offer a range of convenient flight options – the airport in George (International status) and another in Plettenberg Bay (only 35 minutes away!).
Rail access is provided by Union Limited and Rovos Rail, which offer occasional rail trips to the Garden Route.
What to do in Sedgefield
Cocooned between the pine covered hills on one side and the unspoilt beaches on the other, on driving through the main street, visitors are often oblivious to the hidden treasures that Sedgefield holds.
An outdoor lover’s paradise, Sedgefield offers numerous beach walks and trails. Maps of the various trails are available at the Tourism office situated in the Main Road Tel: 044 343 2658 or from the conservation offices at Groenvlei or Rondevlei National Park office.
Bordering the Goukamma Nature Reserve and the Wilderness National Park, Sedgefield is primed for nature lovers. It is known for its varied birdlife, including marine, estuarine and evergreen forest species which can be viewed along the above mentioned trails and bird hides with over 250 listed species. In addition it is part of the National Whale Route from Gericke’s Point and Swartvlei beach where bottlenose dolphins and the Southern Right Whale frequent our coastline annually to calve over a four month period peaking in August.
The Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe, one of the last scheduled steam trains still in use, runs daily from George to Knysna and back, stopping at Sedgefield station. This excursion takes in some of the most breathtaking scenery around the Lakes, golden shoreline and indigenous forests.
The warm Indian Ocean and an abundance of inland water surfaces offer water babies endless opportunities for bathing, boating, waterskiing, surfing, windsurfing, kite surfing, angling, diving and spear fishing. While anglers find excellent surf, rock, estuary or deep-sea fishing, and in Groenvlei, some of the country’s best black bass waters. With its high dunes and wide open plains, Sedgefield is a sought-after paragliding and hang gliding venue.
Next to the N2 on the way to Swartvlei, the Wild Oats Farmers Market and the Scarab Craft Market has become a major attraction for the area. In the relaxed rural atmosphere you will find the very best fresh produce and handmade arts & crafts. The rustic setting and truly old world village market tradition has greatly contributed to placing Sedgefield on the tourism map.
Sedgefield is a sought after property investment area and a fast growing town with municipal status, 2 schools, several churches, a retirement village and a number of social, cultural and sports associations. It also provides a good infrastructure for both residents and visitors as more businesses open their doors.
The very charm and appeal of Sedgefield lies in its very uniqueness! Right in the centre of the prestigious Garden Route, it still preserves a quiet simplicity seldom found in such surroundings.
